First-Year Performance Attribution

Activity #1:

Think of an example of when you had a difficult time initially, but then adjusted and succeeded. Use a blank sheet of paper to write about the experiences (if you need a sheet of paper, please raise your hand and we’ll get one to you).
  • What was happening?
  • How did you feel?
  • What were the factors that helped you adjust?
  • How long did it take for you to make the change?

Example:

When I started at my high school, Hart High School, I had a hard time with the classwork. In particular, I couldn’t write papers. The requirements of the assignments were different than I had experienced. On my first paper, I earned a C-. I was shocked and discouraged, because I am used to getting As and Bs. I wondered if I was able to perform in high school.

I asked my teacher for clarification about what was expected. She answered my questions. She also recommended using tutors on campus. The following week I went in for help. With the help of the tutor, I revised my next paper twice that month. My next grades were B+, A, and A-, and I was now able to write on my own.
