"Joe Dorri loves his students....and it shows in the Good Student, a terrific resource for all students."

the Gold Medal for Life Achievement in the Science of Psychology
Our questionnaire uses a validated measures of psychological distress, portions of survey's to keep it brief, and some surveys are backed by research and being tested so to help students.

Actionable Insights

The Student Success Survey (S3) can be taken anonymously as well as with identifiable information when students, families, and schools decide to do so. Data and recommendations are provided to schools and organizations, and we also collaborate to track student progress and conduct research at a school and across broad levels educational institutions. Data-driven decision-making is key to institutional success, bolstering academic achievement, increasing retention and student persistence, and supporting family and student well-being within the community. We collaborate with schools and organizations to gather data so to identify trends and actionable insights that can be used across multiple levels of education.
We believe that with the right support, students can live fulfilling lives, reach their highest potential, and enrich the lives around them.
To support young people in their journey to be engaging, ethical, and excellent students who attain and cultivate for themselves and others academic achievement, health, safety, and civic and climate change heroism.

Our Vision

Good is defined as Excellent, Ethical, and Engaging. The definition comes from Harvard University's Professor Emeritus Howard Gardner and his colleagues. The Good Student emphasizes these three comments in its approach to supporting students and schools, helping foster the development of good students.

Good Defined

Eco-Heroes

Heroism is taking a personal risk for the common good while others remain inactive or non-responsive, according to Phil Zimbardo, Founder & President of the Heroic Imagination Project (HIP) and who conducted the Stanford Prison Experiment, 1971.

Today one of the greatest challenges facing humanity is climate change. Our goal is to fuse into the concept of "a good student" the characteristics of an "eco-hero," a person who is willing to sacrifice and defend the world from the
threat of climate change.

We partner with organizations to facilitate this at schools and programs internationally and across the country. Learn more about this work by using the contact tab above.

UCLA - Summer Programs' Amazing Psychology Students
"In the award-winning PBS series Discovering Psychology, I cover the fundamental principles in psychology and make the subject accessible to the public. In this book, my mentee, Joe, has done the same for college access and success. He makes use of personal experiences, applies years of empirical research, and his personable teaching style to help young people connect the dots from their present to a fulfilling future.

Fundamental to this work is the highlight of psychological factors that influence college success and life outcomes, which include mental health, a sense of belonging, and most effective mindsets. Any student who is interested in achieving academic success, gaining life direction, navigating college, living healthy, and maximizing their time in college should read this book. This book also highlights self-development, civic engagement, and other crucial topics that make a college experience whole and worthwhile.

Those who support students, such as parents and counselors, also need to read this book to gain a comprehensive look at the obstacles that emerging adults face. This book addresses the distinct challenges of diverse student populations, such as first-generation college students, minorities, women in STEM, and athletes. Furthermore, school leaders will benefit from this read as they will find useful initiatives and practices to increase academic achievement, retention, and the long-term success of their pupils and institutions. Joe establishes himself as an expert in the field.

I highly recommend this book and The Good Student organization, which offers the Student Success Survey (S3). This survey will enable students to get immediate support to life challenges and streamline their journey to school and life success. Joe's work is especially needed during the challenges of the pandemic and changes in learning environments."

– Philip Zimbardo, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University, President & Founder of the Heroic Imagination Project, former APA President, and TED Speaker
Hi I'm Joe,

I enjoy researching, mentoring, teaching, and discovering, andj have the pleasure of teaching psychology to high school students at the University of California, Los Angeles. There we study the criminal mind and general psychology. Furthermore, I am collaborating with a mentor and his team, The Heroic Imagination Project, to initiate an eco-hero youth movement. I also founded and run The Good Student. Although I may have graduated in the top 69 among two million community college students, recognized by the California Legislature, and completed graduate-level courses as an undergraduate at the University of Southern California, I started my academic journey as a disengaged high school student who needed to change his "F" into a passing grade so to graduate high school. I was also struggling with life questions,
family issues, and depression. It’s because of these and later experiences, that lead me to start this The Good Student.

My other accomplishments, just wait for my “failures” they’re next, include sharing my research at a Western Psychological Association convention, recipient of the Ed Walsh Service Award, honored with the Michael Shoman Most Promising Future Educator Scholarship, earning a masters degree, and publishing a highly reviewed book.

There are at least two factors that matter most in my success and journey. First, along my journey I had many good mentors and advisors, such as William Wagner who founded the Interdisciplinary Program at USC, Noam Chomsky who is a pioneer in linguistics and public action, and Phil Zimbardo, who is recognized as “the voice and face of contemporary psychology” and a board member of this nonprofit. Still others include not so renowned individuals, but just as important. They include my high school teacher Gary Newman who taught auto shop and spirituality; Todd White who taught anthropology at the community college and shared the world of literature; and Ron Vincent who is a retired high school teacher and shares his passion for teaching and a board member of this nonprofit. These people encourage and support me and provide great examples of how to live.

The second factor that matters greatly in my life is resilience, which implies failures and challenges, maybe a hundred to one ratio of failures to successes. I hope these help students and readers know that success is not automatic and failing at initial attempts is a part of the journey. Here is the tip of the iceberg: received course grades of “D” and “F” in school and college; not accepted to various graduate schools, such as Princeton and Georgetown; didn't received offers for interviews at jobs I wanted; and other challenges in all domains of life. In all of these, I got up, tried to learn from them, and continued on my journey.

My hope is that when various students see me and learn of my achievements, they see their own potential and a type of blueprint to realize their goals. Other facts: I do martial arts, l
ove dogs, read a lot, and meditate.

Thanks for reading my quick bio, and I wish you the reader health, peace, and life success.

Cordially,
Joe
